The industry would be at an inflection point soon enough with the advent of digital ink and paint taking over Disney's theatrical output, so this film, that year's later Disney effort Oliver & Company, and The Little Mermaid were in some respects the last hurrah for traditional hand-drawn animation as far as Disney's feature-length output was concerned. This is a film that could only really look the way it does, feel the way it does, and be (somewhat) comfortably made the way it was in 1988. Everyone's at the top of their game in this production, from the set designers to the music staff to the actors to those animators doing darn near everything on cels. The theme used in the glorious car chase sequence is one of my favorites. Silvestri sought to combine the old-school stylings of a noir with the madcap insanity of a classic cartoon, and he succeeded.
The whole OST, done by Zemeckis' frequent composer Alan Silvestri, is magnificent.
